Ca’n Gaspar d’es llums

Can Gaspar opened its doors in 1916, and became the first lamp shop in Manacor, thanks to Gaspar Cortès Fuster. His innovative character led him to take an interest in electricity and he trained to become the first electrical installer in Mallorca, a profession that he combined with the shop. Thanks to this, they had a lot of work and gained the trust of the wealthy people of the Levante area. They were even responsible for the installation at the Palau March and the Coves des Drac, among others.

It is interesting to note that in Manacor they installed the first church clock and electricity the convent of the Dominicans, and designed and installed the emergency circuit of the operating theatre at the old Manacor Hospital.

The founder had five children, three of whom dedicated themselves to the business. Gaspar was in charge of the shop, and Rafel and Vicenç, father of the current owner, did the installations. Margalida Fuster Sitges, the third generation of the family, inherited the business in 1979, but she had worked there from a young age and, shortly after she married, her husband joined her.

Interestingly, the story goes that during the Civil War they had to cut the telegraph wiring when the republican troops disembarked in Porto Cristo.
